A safe and caring school journey for every child in Estonia
Bullying-Free School Foundation (SA Kiusamisvaba Kool)
The Bullying-Free School Foundation prevents and stops bullying in Estonian schools. We bring the evidence-based KiVa programme developed at the University of Turku to Estonian schools, train teachers, support staff and parents, and help school communities build a safe and caring learning environment.
The Bullying-Free School Foundation (SA Kiusamisvaba Kool) is an Estonian non-profit foundation established at the end of 2012 to prevent and stop bullying in schools. It was founded by the Good Deed Foundation, the Estonian Association of School Psychologists, the Development Centre of Distinctive Schools, educational researcher Kristiina Treial and social entrepreneurs Kristi Liiva and Rasmus Rask. The organisation carried the name "Kiusamise Vastu" until 2015.
Mission: by preventing and stopping bullying together, to give every child in Estonia a safe and caring school journey towards growing into a happy person.
Vision: by 2035 awareness in Estonian society of how to create and maintain safe, caring relationships at school, where bullying has no place, has grown significantly.
KiVa is a research and evidence based anti-bullying programme developed at the University of Turku in Finland. SA Kiusamisvaba Kool is its representative in Estonia and supports schools throughout the implementation. The programme rests on three pillars:
Prevention: KiVa lessons for grades 1 to 9, teaching materials and e-learning games that build empathy and social skills.
Intervention: a trained KiVa team in every school that resolves bullying cases using one shared methodology.
Monitoring: an anonymous student survey every spring that measures the impact of the programme.
More than 130 schools and educational sites across Estonia have joined the KiVa programme. In Estonian schools the share of students suffering from bullying drops by about a fifth already during the first year of implementation, and internationally the KiVa method has resolved or eased the situation for 98 percent of victims. The Estonian Prevention Science Council has rated the programme excellent both for implementation readiness and for preventive effectiveness.
